MAN, THE HUNTER
About 2 mya, much taller hominid called
Homo ergater appeared. Ergaster were the
first creatures to have bodies much like
ours, with long legs and straight backs.
Adult ergasters were 1.6 meter tall, weighed
65kg and had brains of 850 cc, well over
half as big as ours.
Egasters did not just scavenge for meat like
Homo hibilis. They went hunting for
large animals.
For hunting effectively, ergaster had to
work together, so co-operation was the key
to their success - and may have quickly led
to the development of speech.
Ergaster may have painted their bodies with
red ochre (a mineral found in the ground).
Shortly after Homo ergaster came Homo
erectus ('Upright Man').
Remains of Homo erectus are found as far
from Africa as Java. Stone tools 700,000
years old were found on the Indonesian
island of Flores and suggest they may have
traveled by boat.
Homo erectus learned to light fires, so they
could live in colder places, and make a
wider range of food, edible by cooking.
